About: Self-Portrait No. 2
Following the theme of duality, it seemed only natural to create a self-portrait that represents chasing, for a lack of identity leads to that very behavior. When you’re unsure about who you are, where you’re from, or where you belong, you could be this, you could do that. You tend to change direction on a whim. And wow, have I, more times than I’d like to admit — frantically going after that thing that just might, for once and for all, characterize me.
However, it never happened.
But in recent years — older, wiser, more adult-like years — I learned to appreciate the pursuit, the ride, the experience, rather than place all of my value on the prize.
There is a wonderful quote by Maurice Setter that says: “Too many people miss the silver lining because they’re expecting gold.” I’ve held these words close for quite a while now, giving them the task of grounding me and keeping my expectations in check. So of course I wanted to incorporate the idea into this image about chasing… I hope it makes more sense now!
